For today’s florist’s blog, let’s take a look at the best way to produce excellent compost for your garden. Here’s what ought to compose your compost:
Compostable Ingredients
In general, you can put organic non-meat, non-dairy foods and plant material into your compost. Avoid oils, bread, diseased plants, and walnuts (walnuts contain juglone which may be toxic to the plants you’re trying to grow). Otherwise, you can compost all of the following things:
- Lawn trimmings
- Tea bags
- Veggie peelings
- Fruit peels and cores
- Dead flowers
- Coffee grounds (including some filter papers)
- Egg cartons (shred your egg cartons into smaller chunks)
- Sawdust from untreated wood
- Certain paper products (paper towels, napkins, etc.)
- Hay and straw
In general, you’ll want to have a good mixture and variety of compost ingredients to attain fertile compost. Combine softer materials (fruits, veggies, coffee grounds) with harder materials that take longer to decompose (egg carton, sawdust, straw) to give your compost an excellent balance of nutrients and air.
Once your compost has sat for a few months, you’ll have rich soil that’s ideal for gardening. You’ll produce beautiful flowers, delicious fruits and veggies, you can improve tree health, and give yourself a greener lawn. So start saving leftover banana peels, lawn clippings, and those flowers that we delivered a couple of weeks ago. Get composting! And as always, count on us for our flower delivery services here in Spokane, Spokane Valley, and Coeur d'Alene!
