What to Do With Dry Flowers Part I - Crafting A Bookmark

Posted by Rose & Blossom on 20th Jun 2016

Do you love flowers? Here at Rose & Blossom, your local flower shop, we do too! That’s why we provide flowers to folks throughout Spokane, Spokane Valley, and Coeur d’Alene, including roses by the dozen, bouquets, and other flower arrangements. It’s also why we dedicate time to these articles. Today, we’re going to be talking about dried flower petals and what you can do with this natural form of art. As you may recall, we discussed how to dry flower petals in our last few blogs; so today, let’s put those dried petals to use! Here’s part one of our series on things you can do with dried flower petals:

You Need a Bookmark

You’re digging into Italo Calvino’s If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler at your favorite coffee shop. You’ve settled down with your half-caf latte (your go-to drink while fall rolls in), and you’re digging into a comfortable seat on the patio. You even brought a blanket, so that you won’t have to get up for hours on end.

Now, you’re reading along - you’ve made it to the sixth chapter in one fell swing - but then the worst happens. A passerby has 14 chocolate lab puppies in tow. You cannot continue reading. You leap out of your chair and your blanket, nearly knocking over your latte (which is completely cold at this point), and you surround yourself with uncoordinated, slobbery brown balls of fluff. You couldn’t be more elated at the chocolate lab happenstance.

However, after playing with the pups for far too long, you return to your book to find that the covers are closed. In fact, the book is lying on the ground face down. You’ve lost your page. If only you’d prepared yourself for this event by building a bookmark. I suppose you could have dog-eared the novel, but you keep a pristine collection of literature. You decide then and there, you shan’t let yourself read bookmark free. You must craft a bookmark. And true to your style, it must be the best do-it-yourself bookmark ever. It shall be a dried flower petal bookmark.

Building a Bookmark

After having dried your flowers, you gather materials: Paper, glue, clear contact paper, scissors, ribbon, and a hole punch. After cutting the paper to size, you align your flower petals, applying the tiniest dab of glue to keep them in place. Then, you apply clear contact paper, and then flip to the other side and repeat. Next, you cut the contact paper to size, and put a hole at the top of the bookmark. Finally, you thread the ribbon through, and voila, you have the perfect bookmark. Best of all, it’s made of dried petals from the dozen roses that you received for your anniversary. You couldn’t be more ecstatic, and you’re finally ready to get back to Italo Calvino’s If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler.

We hope you enjoy your crafting, and of course, your reading! If you’re looking for flowers to get started, you can always count on Rose & Blossom. We have flower shops in Spokane and Spokane Valley, and we provide delivery services throughout the Coeur d’Alene area! Shop by occasion here!
