Florist's Tips: Drying Your Flowers Part III
Posted by Rose & Blossom on 31st May 2016
Drying your flower petals isn’t complicated, but there are so many techniques out there! We think that’s just grand here at Rose & Blossom, your Spokane and Spokane Valley flower shop. That’s why we’ve been delving into the most popular flower petal drying techniques in our most recent blogs. We’ve already talked about drying your flower petals by air and drying your petals with your microwave. Today, we’re offering up one more possibility: Drying your flower petals in a book!
Drying Your Petals with a Book
This technique offers a few benefits over our previous techniques. First of all, you can create mini dried flower arrangements with the book technique. Also, your flowers will be nearly completely flat once they’ve dried. Here’s how you can dry your petals with a book:
Step One: Pluck Those Petals & Gather Materials
We’ve already covered how and when to cut (or pluck) your flower petals. Once you have your petals, you’ll want to gather a book that’s big enough to hold your petals, you’ll want some weight, and you’ll need plenty of time to dry those petals. Hardback books work best, but any book will do well with weight on top of it.
Step Two: Placing Petals in Your Book
Pick a book that you don’t mind damaging (it may get a little warped and it may absorb some color from your petals). Open up the book to somewhere in near the center. Place your petals on one page. If you’d like to keep your petals separate from each other, make sure that your petals don’t overlap (they may stick together). You can also organize your petals so that they stick together, if you’re looking for a dimensional effect. Then, gently close the book. Try not to move your petals as you close the book. Finally, put plenty of weight on your book.
Step Three: Wait & See!
Give your petals a couple of weeks to dry! Your book will absorb the moisture of your petals within a week or two, and your petal-drying project will be complete! Voilà!
