Florist's Tips: Drying Your Flowers Part II

Posted by Rose & Blossom on 16th May 2016

In our last blog, we’d talked about one technique for drying the beautiful flowers from our florist’s shop! We’d delved into how you can dry your flowers with a bit of warm, dry air, and a dose of patience. Today, we’re going to talk about the speedy, easy technique: Microwaving your flower petals. Read on to learn the step-by-step process for drying your petals via microwave:

Drying Your Petals with the Microwave

Here Are The Tools You’ll Need:flow2.jpg

To dry your petals by microwave, you’ll need to get a microwave-safe plate, a few paper towels, and of course, your petals (we’d discussed how to select and prepare your petals for drying in our last blog). Now, it’s on to step one…

Step One: Preparing Your Plate

Place two paper towels on your plate. Then place the petals that you’ve plucked on top of those two paper towels. Be sure that none of your petals are touching. Then, cautiously cover all of your petals with another layer of two paper towels. Basically, you’re making a paper-towel-and-petal sandwich with the petals in the center.

Step Two: Microwave

Cautiously microwave your petals. Try out a test plate of petals if you’d like. Petals will dry in a microwave in about 40 seconds depending on the microwave. Petals that have dried out properly should feel dry to the touch, but they shouldn’t be crispy and crumbly.

Step Three: Craft!

That’s it! It’s time to get crafty with your freshly dried petals. Now, if you aren’t a fan of the air dry technique or the microwave technique (or if you just like experimenting), you can always try out the book technique… But more about that will be in our next florist’s blog! Check back in a bit to learn about using a book to dry your flower petals!
